Depending on the multicompany scenario you choose, an implementation team must decide whether or not tables must be logically linked or if data must be synchronized in another way to achieve availability of data across various companies.

There are 3 ways in which data may be shared among companies. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of each:

  1. Logical Table Linking -

  2. Data Replication -

Moving Beyond ERP Customizations: Smarter Solutions for a Future-Ready System

Kathy Barthelt 0 12997 Article rating: 5.0

Transitioning away from ERP customizations can feel like a major hurdle—but with the right strategy, it’s not just possible, it’s powerful. Let’s cut through the noise and look at the real issues... and the smart solutions that pave the way to a leaner, more future-ready ERP.

Common Challenges (and Why They’re Not Dealbreakers)

Reliance on Custom Processes
Custom workflows often become second nature—but are they still serving you? Modern ERPs evolve with industry best practices baked in, and chances are, today’s standard features do what your custom code used to… only better.

Budget & Time Constraints
Testing, retraining, consulting—it all adds up. But the long-term payoff? Reduced technical debt, faster upgrades, and major gains in efficiency and scalability.

User Resistance
Change is hard, especially when teams are comfortable with their tools. But clear communication and a strong change management plan can turn skeptics into champions of a smarter, streamlined system.

We’re standing in the middle of the Fourth Industrial Revolution—Industry 4.0—a transformation that’s redefining how products are made, moved, and managed. But many companies are still operating with Industry 3.0 systems: digitized, yes, but not yet intelligent, connected, or adaptive.

So, what makes Industry 4.0 different? And more importantly—where does your company stand in this transformation?

Automation to Intelligence: The Shift from Industry 3.0 to 4.0
Industry 3.0 introduced computers, electronics, and early automation into manufacturing. It marked the beginning of digital systems and the rise of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) as a bridge between planning and the shop floor. Industry 4.0 takes it further: it brings interconnectivity, real-time data, and AI-powered intelligence into every corner of the industrial environment. It’s about smart factories, self-optimizing systems, and predictive capabilities that weren’t possible before.

8 Pillars of Industry 4.0:

Industry Insights: Why More Manufacturers Are Replacing Paper Work Instructions

For years, paper work instructions have been a standard part of manufacturing. They were easy to distribute, simple to update, and familiar to operators.

But manufacturing has changed. Products are more complex, customer expectations keep rising, and as experienced employees retire, new hires often need to become productive faster than ever before. As a result, many manufacturers are rethinking how information is delivered on the shop floor.

The Challenge with Paper

Paper work instructions create several common challenges:

  • Multiple versions of the same document
  • Outdated instructions remaining at workstations
  • Time spent searching for the correct information
  • Longer training periods for new employees
  • Inconsistent processes between operators

On their own, none of these seem like a major problem, but together they add up to real quality and productivity issues.

A Shift Toward Digital Work Instructions

One trend we're seeing across the manufacturers we work with is a move toward digital work instructions. Rather than relying on printed documents, operators receive the latest approved instructions directly at their workstation, along with supporting images, videos, and other visual aids. This helps ensure every operator is working from the same information, every time.

Manufacturers making this shift are also gaining new capabilities they didn't have with paper: capturing production data directly from the shop floor, improving traceability, and supporting standardized work across shifts and facilities.

What Manufacturers Are Reporting

The common thread across the manufacturers we work with is consistency. When operators have the right information at the right time, training ramps up faster, quality becomes more predictable, and shop floor performance is easier to track across shifts and facilities.

Final Thoughts

New tools don't improve manufacturing on their own. What matters is whether people actually have what they need to do the job well. Digital work instructions are one example of how manufacturers are extending the value of their ERP investment while improving quality, productivity, and workforce development.

If you're exploring ways to standardize work on the shop floor or improve operator performance, we'd be happy to discuss what's working across the manufacturing industry and how those ideas might apply to your organization.
