Infor LN & Baan Tip: How to deal with data growth of your ERP system…

Spending time on managing ERP data can deliver huge benefits, not just in reducing storage costs, but also in improving the experience of business users. Proactively managing application data also helps accelerate key business processes which has a positive impact on customers, suppliers, and partners. Use these solutions to reduce the data growth and disk storage used on your system:

• Use database compression. See Infor LN Data compression (B0050 US) for more information.
• Using the varchar data type for string fields reduces the size of the database. Tables must be recreated for the varchar conversion. See solution 22923520 for the latest porting set.
• Regular archiving history data will have a very positive effect on performance. The database growth will be limited and inserts in large tables will be faster. See the Infor LN User Guide for Archiving (U9352 US) for more information.

In Infor LX, based on how your items are set up and on how you structure the Bill of Material, the following are some usages of a bill of material by functioning area:

  • Engineering & QA – change control, product design and specifications
  • Manufacturing – build instructions , material pick lists
  • Accounting – product costing
  • Materials Inventory – material and inventory planning
  • Sales – customer order processing
  • Production Scheduling – item scheduling (also a component of an MES solution)
In the Shop Floor Control Module, you have the ability to key in both direct labor and indirect labor. However you want to establish specific types (reasons) for the indirect labor. The SFC600 labor entry program shows a reason code field, but it is designed for reject quantity and machine downtime reasons, not indirect labor reasons.

There is a way around this. With an MES solution you have the ability to setup and report indirect time against a specific reason code.

A serialized item is a physical occurrence of a standard item that is given a unique lifetime serial number. This enables tracking of the individual item throughout its lifetime, for example, through the design, production, testing, installation, and maintenance phases. A serialized item can consist of other serialized components.

In Service, a serialized item can be a customer-specific or owner-specific installation. Installation groups are a group of installations/serialized items such as photocopiers, computers, air conditioners, forklifts, lathe machines, and even aircraft.

A serialized item is identified by both the item code and serial number. You can set up the mask used to generate the serial numbers so the serial number includes some fields of the item data, such as the item group and the manufacturer.

In a multi-company structure, the companies can share the serialized item data. All the service departments in the various companies can refer to the same serialized items.

The serialized item can originate from a sales order or a project. The details of a serialized item indicate their origin, for example, by using specific sets of serial numbers for items that originate from sales orders and from projects. Serialized items can also originate from an as-built structure or directly from the production bill of material in Manufacturing.
