Introducing VJES (Visual Job Execution Software)

Kathy Barthelt 0 329 Article rating: 5.0

You would be hard-pressed to completely miss the stories in the news recently about quality issues in manufacturing. The crux of the issue has been a complete focus on production and a lack of focus on quality. Yes, it is a wonderful thing to get the goods out the door, but when you’re sacrificing quality, what good is it really?

There are specifications for production for a reason. Engineering exists for a reason. If products are not built according to exact design specifications, scrap is likely to go up, rework goes up, customer returns and/or service requests go up, and customer satisfaction and overall customer confidence in your product plummets.

Is all of that worth it to get the good out the door in the shortest amount of time possible?

Every manufacturer relies on a few core measurements to manage their operations. Measurements like efficiency, productivity, capacity, labor and equipment utilization are used by manufacturers across the globe to benchmark performance and assess the effectiveness of processes.

Quality needs to be part of that mix. Because measurements like efficiency and productivity don’t necessarily mean high quality, incorporating ways to ensure quality from the start can help to eliminate waste and rework.

Manufacturing quality is achieved through quality control using documented, repeatable, and measurable processes.

What if you could incorporate quality control in every operation, at every work center to not only ensure high-quality finished goods but also simultaneously train high-quality operators?

Introducing Crossroads’ ERP independent solution, VJES (Visual Job Execution Software)...

Infor LN & Baan Tip: Performance improvement by setting the First Free Number Cache (tcmcs0651m000)

Kathy Barthelt 0 644 Article rating: 5.0

Many transactions in all kinds of modules use order numbers or serial numbers. These order numbers are most often automatically generated. In the Number Groups (tcmcs0151m000) session you can define groups of order numbers used for dedicated areas. A Number Group is a group of the first free number series that you can assign to a specific use. All the numbers that Infor LN generates in the number groups that are dedicated to the same purpose are unique.

All the first free numbers are stored in the table tcmcs050.

As many different processes can request a free number from the number groups, we often see delays in the performance, due to locking on the first free number records. This locking issue can have a severe impact on the performance of huge batch-type transactions, but also on the performance perceived by individual users in many areas in LN.

Tips:  LX | BPCS | M3

The challenge in cost accounting is tracking your manufacturing to the levels needed for useful management information. You need feedback for corrective action; but, you need to minimize the cost of collection. Some parts of your operation require specific job-cost tracking while the Just-in-Time areas require

costing in terms of cost per process hour or day. Apply overhead in different ways to different processes and products. Segregate costs into enough detail

to provide management with an accurate picture of the contents of your product. Material, material overhead, labor, fixed overhead, variable overhead, outside processing, outside processing overhead, and so forth all have to be considered.

LX meets your cost accounting needs with the following functionality:

â–ª Four sets of costs: actual, standard, frozen standard, and simulated

â–ª Nine user-defined elements per set

â–ª Full and partial cost roll-up and simulation

â–ª Cumulative in-process cost tracking

â–ª Cost summaries by item

â–ª Cost definition tied to work centers or material type

â–ª Process hour costing

For years, repetitive manufacturing industries have been applying many of the principles in Just-in-Time philosophy. They have established balanced production lines that depend on a steady flow of material to each work station. They schedule production in daily or weekly rates rather than in discrete shop order lots. They track finished inventory by work center rather than by job. They typically backflush stock balances (decrement stock balances upon completion of specific manufacturing steps rather than issued at the beginning of each production run).

Costing is typically based upon a daily rate or hourly rate rather than being associated with specific shop orders.

Repetitive manufacturers use MRP II software adaptable to their environments

in the following key areas:

â–ª Product definition

â–ª Inventory tracking

â–ª MRP/Master Scheduling

â–ª Shop Floor Control

â–ª Purchasing

â–ª Costing

Infor LN & Baan Tip of the Week: Limitations of Customer Defined Fields (CDFs)

Customer Defined fields are fields that can be added to tables, screens, reports, and BODs. Validation and calculation logic can be defined around those fields. This gives you great added capability and flexibility… however, are you aware of the limitations of using CDFs?

  • You cannot define customer-defined fields for tables within Tools (the tl and tt packages).
  • External integrations, such as Infor Integration, EDI, Office Integration, and SOA-based integration, do not support customer-defined fields.
  • You can use customer-defined fields within 4GL reports if editing the 4GL report layouts is still supported in your environment or by using the report personalization features of Infor LN Report Designer. For external reporting, only Infor Reporting and Microsoft Reporting (SSRS) support customer-defined fields.
  • Customer-defined fields cannot store application data in multiple data languages.
  • There is no direct limitation on the number of CDFs in a table. The actual number of fields in a table and the total length of all fields may be limited by the RDBMS you use.
  • Only superusers can run the Convert to Runtime Data Dictionary (ttadv5215m000) session to convert the customer-defined fields and the related domains to the runtime data dictionary.

Note: The full functionality of customer-defined fields is only available within Web UI and LN UI. Customer-defined fields are not displayed in the classic Infor LN BW UI.

If you have questions or need assistance with the use of CDFs, or Infor LN or Baan modifications in general, please contact us for assistance. We’d be happy to help. 800.762.2077 or kbarthelt@crossroadsrmc.com
